Notable Nambour!

NambourNambour RSL swung open the doors and put down the welcome mat for the final heat for Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast. Over 300 people attended and encouraged every act. The standard was so high that there was a tie with the top 6 acts being within a 5-point range. The audience overwhelmingly unanimous voted to let all 5 acts through and Nambour RSL obliged as well and offered a 5th prize so no finalist would miss out.Rosie Camilleri

Rosie Camilleri from Buderim discussed the funny differences between Italian engagement and an Australian engagement before singing “Oh My Beloved Daddy”.

Roger Hardy 66 of Buderim, sung a self-penned song about his love of the Sunshine Coast called “Where I am Now”.

Ann Finch, 87 of Birtinya proved she still has a great set of lungs as she played a Medley of Waltz on the harmonica, which had the whole crowd joining in for a sing-a-long.

Trevor Mitchell 66, from Mooloolaba’s version of the Neil Diamond hit “If You Know What I Mean” had many a seniors lady’s heart swooning.

5 ladies who formed the tap dancing group called Allez Katz showed everyone present some smart tapping moves to the tune “ Stepping Out”.

All were ecstatic to have made it through to the Grand Final on the 7th November at Caloundra RSL. Special guest judge for the Grand Final is Gold logie award winner and star of stage and screen John Wood.

Maroochy Magic

Maroochy galleryHeat 2 of Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast was full of surprises and talent at the Maroochy RSL. 14 Acts presented a variety of performance to the 250 plus crowd.  The heat even had a loyal gallery of fans.  Singers, a poet, tap dancers, a belly dancer, comedian and even a horse ensured a great afternoon’s entertainment. Choosing for finalist was once again not an easy task with such a high standard of entertainment.

Tom DoyleTom Doyle, 71 from Moffat Beach sung Robbie Williams “Angels” and the crowd responded with a “Countdown” moment complete with hands swaying in the air.

The Tap Katz danced their way into the hearts of both judges and the audience to “Anything Goes”. The girls even danced an encore when they joined judge Paul Dellit on stage when he sung at the end of the show.

The Spring Racing Carnival may be in full swing but dressage featured at the Maroochy heat with George Farmer, 62 from Caloundra.  Rocco and Rosella performed a hilarious routine, which earned a starting place in the Grand Final.Dressage at Maroochy

The Likely LadsThe Likely Lads – Brian Williams, 62 from Buddina and Geoffrey Harrod-Eagles, 58 from Minyama presented a song called “Wendy”, about a girlfriend full of air.

The final heat for the series is on Saturday 17 October, 2pm at Nambour RSL.  Come along and see who will be the last 4 finalists to go through to the Grand Final.

Talented Tewantin

The first heat for Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast kicked off in amazing style at the Tewantin-Noosa RSL on Saturday 3rd October.

14 acts displayed the variety and talent these talented seniors had to offer.

Over 150 people attended the first heat eager to see and support their local talent.

The standard was very high making the judges decisions even harder. The four finalists to go through to the Grand Final were:

MihaMiha Waahi 56, from Sunshine Beach sung “How Great Thou Art” incorporating his Maori heritage by singing one verse in Maori.

Ron Smith from Beerwah came straight form his hospital bed to perform the Matt Monroe classic “Born Free”

Rockin On from across the Sunny Coast performed the Ventures classic “Pipeline”.

It’s not too long before we kick off our Sunshine Coast series. Auditions are on Wednesday 16 September commencing 10am at the beautiful Living Choice Twin Waters Retirement Village.  So if you’ve been thinking of being a part of Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast, now is your chance! We would love to see you. The registration form is on this website. Just go to Sunshine Coast and go to entry details. You can check out the terms and conditions as well. After six heats and two semi-finals the City Hall welcomed over 1200 people to see who would become the 2009 Senior Superstar.

12 acts from across Brisbane presented an extraordinary afternoon of entertainment.
Singers performed a range of sings. Max Johnson, Angelita Paloma, George Prior and Pam Hodgson performed jazz, Broadway and musical hits. Jianrong Zhang sung Chinese Opera, Elvis (Jim Hodgson) was also in the building as well pianist Dot Williams, poet Anita Reed and comedian Joy Darmody.

Guest judges Simon Gallaher and Rachael Beck were amazed at the standard and talent. As were regular judges Judy Glen and Paul Dellit. This made their job even harder.

In third place was Barbara Tyrrell who sung the Irving Berlin classic “How Deep Is the Ocean”.Michael Burke
Second place went to first time entrant Michael Burke. Michael’s version of “Unchained Melody” had everyone breathless.
Gospel Darcy
The winner of Senior Superstar 2009 is no stranger to the series. Darcy Turgeon from Deagon had the audience screaming for more. Darcy entered last year and made it through to the final coming in 3rd place with his performance of the Gender bender Boy George’s song Karma Chameleon” complete with heels, hosiery and make-up.Darcy's darkside!
This year Darcy sung the Manhattan Transfer song “Operator” in a holier than thou gospel robe and dreadlocks. He then transformed into mid song into a wayward Billy Idol look- a-like, which brought the house down.
Darcy will be travelling to Cairns Queenslander class on the Sunlander courtesy of Traveltrain. He also won 2 Emerald tickets to see Liza Minnelli at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Everyone at Senior Superstar congratulates Darcy and all the contestant that entered this years series. They have all proved that talent has no age limit.

Finals Fever!!!

Only days to go until we discover who will be Senior Superstar 2009.   The finalists have been busy working on their performances and their outfits. It’s going to be a great show. Our special guest judges Simon Gallaher and Rachael Beck will be joined on the panel by Opera Diva Judy Glen and our resident judge Paul Dellit. We also have special guest performances from previous years winners Patricia Newton, Peter Vance and Glad Graveson.
This is a free event and is not ticketed. Doors open at 1.30pm. You can also have a chance of winning 2 Emerald tickets to see Liza Minnelli on 30 October at the Entertainment Centre. Pick up a flyer from the ushers and you could win!

The Broncos Leagues Club played host to the second semi-final on Sunday 2 August.

300 people filled the club; many had followed the series throughout Brisbane. Today, they would discover who would go through to the final.

The judges were faced with a very tough job. Thirteen talented acts performed with six chosen to go through to the Grand Final at City Hall.

Jim Hodgson, 74 from Zillmere sung his own composition about his love for his adopted town called “The Brisbane Boast”.

Pam Hodgson, 62 from Samford sung the Liza Minnelli song Cabaret.

Angelita Paloma, 60 from Paddington performed her own version of the Willie Nelson song “Always On My Mind”.

Darcy Turgeon, 58 from Deagon looked arresting as he sung the Paper Lace 70’s hit “ The Night Chicago Died”.

All were extremely excited to have made it through from 89 performers to the Grand Final.

Semi Final 1 Mt Gravatt Bowls Club Saturday 1 August

It was the best of the Southside with 11 acts performing to a capacity crowd at Mt Gravatt Bowls Club. Judges for both semi finals were Opera singer, comedienne Judy Glenn, tenor Greg Moore and producer performer Paul Dellit.

Max Johnson from Carina, 73 who sung the emotionally stirring classic hit “What Kind of Fool am I?” Max is a well-loved regular to the series.

Joy Darmody from Indooroopilly, 69 was literally half man and half woman singing “The Ballad of Barry and Frida” by Victoria Wood.

George Prior, 80 from Durack looked dapper and sung Matt Monroe’s “Born Free”

Michael Burke 69 from Indooroopilly had many people reaching for the tissues with his rendition of “Danny Boy”. Michael stopped singing over 30 years ago. He decided to start singing again using Senior Superstar as his starting point.Michael Bourke

Anita Reed from Holland Park recited a poem about what happens when you visit Nimbin called “Dancing With Hippies”. Anita had the audience in stitches with her humorous presentation.Anita Reed

Jianrong Zhang 54 from Carina had the audience captivated with a Chinese song called “What a Beautiful World”. This is Jianrong’s first year at Senior Superstar. The judges referred to her voice as outstanding and exquisite.

The final heat of proved one of the most popular. Over 300 people crammed into Moorooka Sports and Community Club to see who would be the last acts chosen to go through to the semi-final at Mt Gravatt.

10 acts sung, danced and recited to the crowd. Jenny Peart 66, from forest Lake showed her flexibility in her City Cat dancer routine, Merle Edmonds (left),  from Jindalee looked elegant  and sounded wonderful singing “Dancing in the Clouds”

The judges found the decision tough resulting in a tie for the fourth spot.

It was third time lucky for Moorooka local Jim Skelton (below), 81. Jim performed the Frank Sinatra hit “Come Fly With Me”. The crowd including his fan club loved his performance.

Denis Cochran, 72 from Greenslopes sung “Danny Boy”, tying with Margarita Escalon from Calamvale who performed a dance from El Salvador.
