The Sunshine Coast series has well and truly broken records with this sixth series ever with venues for the two heats and grand final packed to the rafters. More than 700 people turned out to see the 12 Grand Final acts take centre stage at Caloundra RSL. There was a great range of talent on show with a variety of singers, two tap dancing groups, a harmonica player, musicians, and a poet.
Bli Bli’s 62 year old Catherine Fox was crowned the winner of Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast at Caloundra RSL when she lip synced her way through a very funny rendition of Victoria Wood’s “Let’s Do It” to take out the grand final. This was Catherine’s first year participating in Senior Superstar after being urged by her husband to give it a go.
Mapelton bush poet, John Major took out second place reciting a poem he had co-written titled “A Library Burns”. The poem was a nod to the over 55s and the knowledge and wealth of information that is lost when an older person dies. John didn’t stop at one poem and then pulled out a very humours poetic take on poker machine addiction. John was also awarded the People’s Choice award. Both Catherine and John now have the opportunity to perform at the South East Grand Final in November at the Concert Hall, Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
Third place went to 73 year old Moffat Beach singer, Tom Doyle for his performance of Elvis’s “Lord You Gave Me A Mountain”.
Catherine won a $1,000 holiday of her choice from Cross Country Tours, a $100 voucher from Caloundra RSL and a colour consultation from Chic Styling. Well done Catherine!

It was a great start to the Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast series when Maroochy RSL hosted Heat 1 on Saturday 4 February. Over 250 people came along to see which of the 13 acts would go into the final. The judges task was not easy, as the 13 acts who took part in the first heat dazzled with their displays of dancing, singing and comical prowess. The competition was of such a high stand that there was a tie.
Our tied acts were 73-year-old crooner Tom Doyle who wooed the audience with his version of the Elvis classic “You Gave Me a Mountain? and a talented ladies tap group called Castaways tapped their way with into the Grand Final with their feel-good performance to “Hit Me Up” from the movie Happy Feet.
Buderim chanteuse Kathleen Godwin managed to overcome her nerves and captivated the crowds with her rendition of Crystal Gale’s 1970s hit “Don’t it Make My Brown Eyes Blue”.
Loveable larrikin and bush poet John Major from Mapleton delighted the audience with a Blue the Shearer poem “The Cross-Eyed Bull” and is sure to delight the crowds when he takes to the stage again for the March 3 Grand Final in Caloundra.
At just 62 years young, Catherine Fox was a first time entrant in the Senior Superstar competition but none of the judges could believe she hadn’t grown-up on stage telling jokes because she was such a natural. Catherine had the audience and the judges laughing so loudly when she mimed the Victoria Wood’s song “Let’s Do It?. She also walked away from the heat with not only a place in the final but also the coveted People’s Choice Award.
The second and final heat is fast approaching and we’d love to see you there.
Caloundra RSL opened its doors and auditorium for this special occasion. Judges and audiences were wowed with performances from 12 acts including tap dancers, singers from every genre and musicians. Finding a winner was extremely difficult with a points being so close that a tie for second place occurred.
The winner of Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast 2010 was Jenny Wood. This was Jenny’s fourth year at Senior Superstar and she chose the hit song from he musical Evita, “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”. Jenny amazed the audience with her “perfect pitch” performance of the song.
For the first time there was a tie for second place.
Lindsay Hope was inspired to sing a song his 95-year-old father sung to him called “Two Hundred Year Old Alcoholic”. Lindsay had the audience captivated and amused with his song. The chorus rung true to seniors “It’s never too late to start living, to get out and have some fun. The sun will be just as shining in the morning as the first day the world begun.”
Tying was Kathleen Godwin. Kathleen’s version of the Patsy Cline hit “ Just a Closer Walk With Thee” had judges and audiences amazed at her melodic and powerful voice.
In third place was the Sunshine Coast’s Elvis, Tom Doyle. Tom followed up his heat winning Elvis performance with “Suspicious Minds”
Special guest judge, John Wood commented on the high standard and the great afternoon of entertainment these seniors provided.
Jenny Wood will now be heading off on a Longreach adventure for two compliments of Queensland Rail.
Thanks to everyone who participated in Senior Superstar, we hope to see you all again next year. Also special thanks to our sponsors, Sunshine Coast Council, Living Choice, The Public Trustee, Sunshine FM, Queensland Rail, Sunshine Coast Daily and Channel 7.
